Nauru

From July 29 to July 31st 2025

July 29th

We arrived in Bobwiki on Air Nauru via flight ON24 at 12:45pm. We were picked up by 2 nice islander ladies who worked for the hotel and drove us 20 minutes to the Ewa Lodge. Located on top of a grocery store, bank, liquor store, and other kinds of markets - we were in the best accommodations on the island and in the center of all the action.

We decided do walk 20 minutes to dinner at a place called Praises - a local Chinese place. Max had the vegetable chop suey, vegetable fried rice (both of which also contained meat). Hailey had the wonton noodle soup. The shop owners were very nice, the food was as good as you can hope for on an island that only gets 200 visitors per year.

On the walk home we passed by pitbull dogs chained up to their trees in the front yard, kids playing on the beach and in the ocean, adolescent aged boys practicing rugby drills in the parking lot, people returning home from work, etc. The loud speakers with bass bumped all night.

July 30th

We woke up around 7am to start our “Island Circumference Walk” by 8am. The temperature was 82, the humidity was 74%, and 3 hours after beginning our walk, we finished! 10.88 miles later and over 1,000 calories burned - we took the rest of the day to recover, rehydrate, and catch up on travel planning. These trips don’t just plan themselves!

We went down to the restaurant for lunch where Hailey had a tunafish, potato & curry wrap. Max had a hamburger. Max then decided to go in the grocery store next door to find something different to eat for lunch. He came out with wheat biscuits, salted peanuts, salted cashews and pretzels. When back in the room Hailey cut up a paw paw and ate an orange.

Around sundown, Hailey was seated on the patio of the motel watching the locals practice their evening rugby drills and skills. A neighbor came out and invited us to Pub Quiz night at The Bay Restaurant. “It only happens once a week!” was the sales pitch and shortly thereafter we got ourselves put together to join him at The Bay Restaurant.

Within 20 minutes we were placing orders for food and drink at The Restaurant. Our new friend, Tony from New Zealand, came back to find us and let us know that the quiz night was cancelled because of the tsunami warning. The Australian government is the group that puts the quiz on, and because they issued a tsunami warning for the area, that ended up cancelling quiz night.

We ate our cheese pizza and tuna sashimi, drank our waters (we were too dehydrated from our hike earlier to drink anything), and chatted with our new friend before going back.

July 31st

We had a slow morning, Max went for a 5 mile run around 8am, Hailey did pilates and core in the room. By 11:30am we ventured back down to the restaurant for lunch. Hailey had 2 boiled eggs in a dark red curry sauce. Max had veggie fried rice. We then both indulged with a soft serve ice cream in a cup. Hailey ran to the supermarket to get chocolate chip cookies to make an ice cream cookie sandwich. It was the excitement of the day!

We took a nap around 1pm, then checked out of the room at 5pm for our 8pm flight.

We made it to the VIP lounge at the airport where they had freshly cut fruit, finger sandwiches, a fridge stocked full of beverages and complimentary wifi!
